Managing stress and emotional wellbeing

Aligned to NHES 7 — SHAPE America National Standards.

What this lesson teaches

Stress is the worried or tense feeling you get when things feel like too much, like before a test or after an argument. Everyone feels it sometimes, and there are healthy ways to handle it, like talking to someone, being active, taking deep breaths, or resting. Knowing when to ask an adult for help is a strength, not a weakness.

Worked example

Before a big test, if you feel jittery, you could take five slow breaths, go for a short walk, or talk to a parent about what is worrying you to help your body calm down.

Practice questions

  1. Name two healthy ways to handle stress.
  2. What is one situation that might feel stressful?
  3. Who could you talk to when you feel overwhelmed?
