Injury prevention and basic first aid

Aligned to NHES 7 — SHAPE America National Standards.

What this lesson teaches

Many injuries can be prevented with simple habits, like wearing a helmet when biking, a seatbelt in the car, and being careful near water. Knowing basic first aid means you can help with small hurts, like cleaning a scrape and covering it with a bandage. In a real emergency, you should get an adult or call for help.

Worked example

If you scrape your knee, the steps are: wash your hands, rinse the scrape with clean water, gently pat it dry, and cover it with a clean bandage.

Practice questions

  1. Name two things that prevent injuries.
  2. List the steps to clean a small scrape.
  3. When should you call for emergency help?
