Healthy friendships and responding to bullying

Aligned to NHES 4 — SHAPE America National Standards.

What this lesson teaches

A healthy friendship is built on kindness, trust, and respect, where both people feel good. Bullying is when someone is mean on purpose, again and again, to hurt or scare another person. If you are bullied or see it happen, telling a trusted adult is the right thing to do, and it is not tattling.

Worked example

If you see a classmate being teased every day, you could stand near the person being bullied, say something kind, and tell a teacher, who can help make it stop.

Practice questions

  1. Name two traits of a good friend.
  2. What is the difference between tattling and reporting bullying?
  3. What can you do if you see someone being bullied?
