Body control: balance, stretching, and stability

Aligned to SHAPE 1 — SHAPE America National Standards.

What this lesson teaches

Balance is keeping your body steady so you do not fall over, and you can practice it just like any skill. Stretching keeps your muscles loose and ready to move. Good body control helps you start, stop, and change direction without tumbling.

Worked example

Stand like a flamingo on one foot and count to five, then switch feet. Hold your arms out wide to help you stay steady, like a tightrope walker.

Practice questions

  1. Balance on one foot to a count of 5.
  2. Walk heel-to-toe along a tape line.
  3. Show a slow, gentle stretch you can hold.
