Movement concepts and spatial awareness

Aligned to SHAPE 2 — SHAPE America National Standards.

What this lesson teaches

Spatial awareness means knowing where your body is and keeping a safe space around you so you do not bump into people or things. Your own little space is called personal space, like a bubble around you, and the big room you all share is general space. You can move fast or slow, high or low, and in many directions.

Worked example

Imagine a bubble around your body. Now walk around the room moving slowly, then quickly, without popping anyone else's bubble or touching the walls.

Practice questions

  1. Walk fast, then slow, without bumping anyone.
  2. Show a high shape, then a low shape.
  3. What is your personal space bubble?
