Mature movement patterns and skill combinations

Aligned to SHAPE 1 — SHAPE America National Standards.

What this lesson teaches

As you grow, your basic skills become smoother and you start combining them, like dribbling a ball while you run or catching and then throwing in one motion. Good technique, like stepping toward your target when you throw, makes your movements stronger and more accurate. The more you practice, the more natural it feels.

Worked example

Try an overhand throw at a target: step forward with the opposite foot from your throwing arm, point at the target, and follow through. Then dribble a ball while walking to a wall and back.

Practice questions

  1. Throw overhand stepping with the opposite foot.
  2. Dribble a ball while walking 10 steps.
  3. Why does stepping toward your target help?
