Components of fitness and personal goals

Aligned to SHAPE 3 — SHAPE America National Standards.

What this lesson teaches

Fitness has different parts: endurance lets you keep going, strength lets you push and lift, and flexibility lets you bend and stretch. Different activities build different parts, and your body gets fitter a little at a time. Setting a small personal goal helps you grow stronger week by week.

Worked example

Set a simple goal like doing 5 push-ups this week and 7 next week. Running builds endurance, push-ups build strength, and reaching for your toes builds flexibility.

Practice questions

  1. Name the three parts of fitness from the lesson.
  2. Pick a small fitness goal for this week.
  3. Which activity builds endurance?
