Presenting a Clear Line of Reasoning
Aligned to SL.11-12.4 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
What this lesson teaches
A strong presentation lets listeners follow the reasoning as it unfolds, because they cannot reread a slide the way they reread a page. Order the points so each prepares the next, signal transitions aloud, and shape the organization to the purpose and audience.
Worked example
Arguing for a later school start, a speaker states the recommendation first, then gives three reasons flagged out loud as 'first,' 'second,' and 'most importantly,' saving the strongest for last; because listeners were told the structure, they never wonder where the talk is going.
Practice questions
- Choose a position and outline three supporting points in the order that best builds toward your conclusion.
- Write the spoken transition you would use between two points so listeners hear the structure.
- Explain how you would adjust the presentation for an audience that already disagrees with you.
