Adapting Speech and Commanding Register

What this lesson teaches
Skilled speakers shift register deliberately — formal for an interview, plain for a briefing, warm for a toast — and command formal English when the situation calls for it. Adapting is a choice, not an accident, and knowing the formal option gives you the freedom to depart from it.
Worked example
The same student explains a project casually to a friend — 'so basically it blew up' — and formally to a review panel — 'the prototype failed under load, which reshaped our design'; the content matches, but only the deliberate shift to formal English fits the panel's expectations.
Practice questions
- Take one idea and script it once in casual register and once in formal English.
- Name the specific features — contractions, vocabulary, sentence shape — that changed between the two.
- Describe a situation where switching to formal register would change how listeners judge your credibility.
