Digital Media That Earns Its Place

Aligned to SL.11-12.5 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.

What this lesson teaches

Visuals, audio, and data displays should do work words cannot — revealing a trend, a scale, or a relationship at a glance — not merely decorate. Choose each element to add understanding or interest, and cut anything that competes with your point instead of serving it.

Worked example

Explaining a budget shift, a speaker replaces a wall of numbers with one bar chart where a single tall bar dwarfs the rest; the audience grasps the imbalance instantly, and the image earns its place because seeing it does what a sentence could only assert.

Practice questions

  1. Identify one idea in a presentation that a visual or audio element could convey better than words.
  2. Describe the specific media element you would use and what understanding it adds.
  3. Name one flashy element you would cut and explain how it would have distracted from your message.
