Evaluating a Speaker's Reasoning

What this lesson teaches
Assessing a speaker means separating stance from support — identifying the position, the premises it rests on, the evidence offered, and the word choices that color it. Listen for where persuasion leans on loaded language or an unstated assumption rather than proof.
Worked example
A speaker urging a policy repeats the phrase 'common-sense reform,' which sounds like an argument but is only a label; a careful listener notes that calling the plan sensible is not the same as showing it works, and looks for the evidence the flattering phrase was standing in for.
Practice questions
- Restate a speaker's stance and the main premise it depends on.
- Identify one piece of evidence offered and judge whether it actually supports the stance.
- Point out a word or phrase that persuades by connotation rather than proof and explain its effect.

Evaluar a un orador implica separar la postura del apoyo — identificar la posición, las premisas en que descansa, la evidencia ofrecida y las elecciones de palabras que la tiñen. Escucha dónde la persuasión se apoya en lenguaje cargado o en una suposición no dicha en vez de en prueba.
Ejemplo: Un orador que promueve una política repite la frase 'reforma de sentido común', que suena a argumento pero es solo una etiqueta; un oyente cuidadoso nota que llamar sensato al plan no es lo mismo que mostrar que funciona, y busca la evidencia que la frase halagadora reemplazaba.
