What this lesson teaches
Grade-10 literary nonfiction packs dense arguments, embedded data, and shifting voice. Read proficiently by separating claim from evidence and noticing when the author moves from reporting to arguing.
Worked example
In a long essay, a sentence like 'the numbers are clear, and they should alarm us' signals a shift — the first half reports, the second half urges — so a strong reader flags where analysis turns into advocacy.
Practice questions
- Mark where a nonfiction text moves from reporting facts to making an argument.
- Separate one claim from the evidence given for it.
- Summarize the passage's argument without repeating its persuasive language.
