How Claims Are Built and Refined

What this lesson teaches
A claim is developed and sharpened by particular sentences and paragraphs — a definition here, a qualifier there. Analyze how a specific portion of text refines the author's idea rather than merely repeating it.
Worked example
A paragraph that adds 'in most urban districts' to an earlier blanket claim narrows the argument, protecting it from easy counterexamples in rural areas.
Practice questions
- Find a sentence that adds a qualifier or limit to a broad claim.
- Explain how that sentence strengthens or narrows the argument.
- Describe how the claim would be weaker without it.
