Sleep, screen time, and healthy habits

Aligned to NHES 7 — SHAPE America National Standards.

What this lesson teaches

Teens need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep, but screens and busy schedules often cut that short. Too little sleep hurts your mood, focus, and even your physical growth. Building habits like a screen-free wind-down and charging your phone outside your room protects your health and your school performance.

Worked example

Try putting your phone on a charger in another room an hour before bed and reading or listening to music instead, so your brain can wind down and you fall asleep faster.

Practice questions

  1. How many hours of sleep do teens need?
  2. Name one way screens hurt your sleep.
  3. Describe a healthy wind-down routine for bedtime.
