Digital safety and evaluating health information

Aligned to NHES 3 — SHAPE America National Standards.

What this lesson teaches

A lot of health information online is wrong or is really an ad in disguise, so it helps to ask who made it and why. Reliable information comes from credible sources, and you can check a claim against more than one trusted site. Staying safe online also means protecting your privacy and thinking before you share.

Worked example

If an influencer promotes a supplement that promises amazing results, ask whether they are being paid to say it, and check the claim against a credible health source before believing it.

Practice questions

  1. What two questions help you judge online health info?
  2. Why might an influencer's claim be unreliable?
  3. Name one way to protect your privacy online.
