Radicals and Rational Exponents

What this lesson teaches
A radical and a rational exponent name the same thing: √a = a^(1/2) and the nth root of a^m = a^(m/n). Once written as exponents, use the exponent rules to combine or simplify.
Worked example
Simplify a^(1/2) × a^(1/3). Multiplying like bases adds exponents: 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6, so the product is a^(5/6).
Practice questions
- Rewrite √(x^3) using a rational exponent.
- Simplify x^(3/4) × x^(1/4).
- Rewrite 7^(2/5) as a radical.
