Writing to Explain

What this lesson teaches
An informative essay examines a topic by selecting relevant facts, organizing them logically, and analyzing what they mean. Group related ideas, define key terms, and use transitions to guide the reader.
Worked examples
Example 1
Explaining how bread rises, you first define yeast, then describe the gas it releases, then explain why the dough expands, each step building on the last with clear transitions.
Example 2
Explaining a car engine, define compression before you use it. A reader who meets an undefined term stops reading and starts guessing.
Example 3
Transitions carry logic, not decoration. 'However' promises a contrast; using it before a sentence that agrees confuses the reader.
Practice questions
- Choose a topic and list three facts worth explaining.
- Order those facts so each one prepares the next.
- Add a transition that links two of your points.

Ejemplo 1: Al explicar cómo crece el pan, primero defines la levadura, luego describes el gas que libera y después explicas por qué la masa se expande, cada paso apoyado en el anterior con transiciones claras.
Ejemplo 2: Al explicar un motor, define la compresión antes de usarla. Un lector que encuentra un término sin definir deja de leer y empieza a adivinar.
Ejemplo 3: Las transiciones llevan lógica, no adorno. 'Sin embargo' promete un contraste; usarlo antes de una oración que concuerda confunde al lector.
