How Dialogue & Incidents Drive a Story

What this lesson teaches
Analyze how specific lines of dialogue or particular incidents move the plot forward or reveal character. Look for turning-point moments.
Worked examples
Example 1
A single overheard conversation reveals a betrayal, which propels the protagonist to leave town — the dialogue is the hinge of the plot.
Example 2
A refused handshake at a funeral, described in half a line, sets up a feud that runs the rest of the book.
Example 3
An incident only drives the plot if something becomes impossible afterwards. If the story could continue unchanged without it, it is scenery.

Cómo el Diálogo y los Sucesos Impulsan una Historia
Analiza cómo líneas específicas de diálogo o sucesos particulares hacen avanzar la trama o revelan la personalidad de los personajes. Busca los momentos que marcan un punto de inflexión.
Ejemplo 1: Una conversación escuchada por accidente revela una traición, lo que impulsa al protagonista a abandonar el pueblo — el diálogo es el eje de la trama.
Ejemplo 2: Un apretón de manos rechazado en un funeral, descrito en media línea, prepara una enemistad que recorre el resto del libro.
Ejemplo 3: Un suceso solo impulsa la trama si después algo se vuelve imposible. Si la historia podría seguir igual sin él, es decorado.
