What this lesson teaches
The central idea is the main point a text builds through its details, not just its subject. Find it, then summarize using only what the text says — no personal opinions.
Worked example
An article on bees lists their role in pollinating crops and their recent decline. Subject: bees. Central idea: bees are vital to food supply and need protection. Objective summary reports those facts without adding 'we should all care.'
Practice questions
- State the central idea of an article in one sentence, then list two details that support it.
- Write a 3-sentence summary using only the text's information.
- Cross out any opinion words that slipped into your summary.

Idea Central y Resumen
La idea central es el punto principal que un texto construye con sus detalles, no solo el asunto del que trata. Identificala y luego resume usando solo lo que dice el texto — sin opiniones personales.
Ejemplo: Un articulo sobre las abejas menciona su papel en la polinizacion de cultivos y su reciente disminucion. Asunto: las abejas. Idea central: las abejas son vitales para la produccion de alimentos y necesitan proteccion. El resumen objetivo reporta esos datos sin agregar 'todos deberiamos preocuparnos'.
