What this lesson teaches
You can multiply in any order and still get the same answer. You can also break a hard fact into two easy facts and add them.
Worked example
To find 6 × 7, break 7 into 5 and 2. Then 6 × 5 = 30 and 6 × 2 = 12. Add them: 30 + 12 = 42. So 6 × 7 = 42.
Practice questions
- Is 3 × 8 the same as 8 × 3? Explain.
- Break 8 into 5 and 3 to solve 8 × 4.
- Use two easy facts to solve 7 × 6.
