Telling Time to Five Minutes
Aligned to 2.MD.C.7 — Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.
What this lesson teaches
The short hand shows the hour and the long hand shows the minutes. Count by 5s around the clock for the minutes. Use a.m. for morning and p.m. for afternoon and night.
Worked example
The short hand points at 3 and the long hand points at 4. Count by 5s to the 4: 5, 10, 15, 20. It is 3:20.
Practice questions
- The long hand is on the 6. How many minutes is that?
- Write the time when the short hand is on 7 and the long hand is on 2.
- Is 8:00 in the morning a.m. or p.m.?
