Making a Line Plot

Aligned to 2.MD.D.9 — Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.

What this lesson teaches

A line plot shows measurements on a number line. You put one X above the number for each object that is that length.

Worked example

You measure three pencils: 4 in, 5 in, and 5 in. On the line plot, put one X above 4 and two X's above 5.

Practice questions

  1. Four crayons are 3, 3, 4, and 6 cm long. How many X's go above 3?
  2. On a line plot, what does each X stand for?
  3. If two erasers are both 2 in, how many X's go above 2?
