Writing to Explain
Aligned to W.2.2 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
What this lesson teaches
When you write to teach, name your topic, share facts about it, and end with a closing sentence.
Worked examples
Example 1
Topic: Cats. Fact: Cats have soft fur and sharp claws. Fact: They sleep a lot. Ending: Cats are fun pets to have.
Example 2
Topic: Volcanoes. Fact: Hot melted rock rises from deep underground. Fact: Some erupt after sleeping for years. Ending: Volcanoes build new land.
Example 3
Every sentence should be about the topic. If one sentence is about your uncle, it belongs in a different piece of writing.
Practice questions
- Pick a topic and write a sentence that names it.
- Write two facts about your topic.
- Add an ending sentence that wraps up your writing.

Escribir para explicar
Cuando escribes para enseñar, nombra tu tema, comparte datos sobre él y termina con una oración de cierre.
Ejemplo 1: Tema: Los gatos. Dato: Los gatos tienen pelo suave y garras filosas. Dato: Duermen mucho. Cierre: Los gatos son mascotas divertidas.
Ejemplo 2: Tema: Los volcanes. Dato: La roca derretida y caliente sube desde muy adentro de la tierra. Dato: Algunos hacen erupción después de años dormidos. Cierre: Los volcanes crean tierra nueva.
Ejemplo 3: Cada oración debe ser sobre el tema. Si una oración es sobre tu tío, pertenece a otro escrito.
