What this lesson teaches

There are three kinds of writing: opinion (what you think and why), informative (facts about a topic), and narrative (a story with events in order). Linking words like 'because,' 'also,' and 'then' connect your ideas.

Worked examples

Example 1

Opinion: 'Dogs are the best pets because they are friendly.' Informative: 'Dogs need food, water, and walks.' Narrative: 'First we got the puppy, then we named her.'

Example 2

Opinion: 'Winter is the best season because you can sled.' Informative: 'Snow forms when water freezes in clouds.' Narrative: 'Last winter we got snowed in for three days.'

Example 3

The three kinds answer different questions: what I think, what is true, and what happened. Mixing them up is the most common writing mistake at this age.

Practice questions

Write an opinion sentence using the word 'because.'
Write two facts about an animal you like.
Tell a short story using 'first,' 'then,' and 'last.'

Escritura de Opinión, Informativa y Narrativa

Hay tres tipos de escritura: de opinión (lo que piensas y por qué), informativa (datos sobre un tema) y narrativa (una historia con eventos en orden). Las palabras de enlace como 'porque,' 'además' y 'luego' conectan tus ideas.

Ejemplo 1: Opinión: 'Los perros son las mejores mascotas porque son amigables.' Informativa: 'Los perros necesitan comida, agua y paseos.' Narrativa: 'Primero conseguimos al cachorro, luego le pusimos nombre.'

Ejemplo 2: Opinión: 'El invierno es la mejor estación porque puedes andar en trineo.' Informativa: 'La nieve se forma cuando el agua se congela en las nubes.' Narrativa: 'El invierno pasado nos quedamos encerrados por la nieve tres días.'

Ejemplo 3: Los tres tipos responden preguntas distintas: qué pienso, qué es cierto y qué pasó. Confundirlos es el error de escritura más común a esta edad.
