The Lesson in a Story

What this lesson teaches
Fables and folktales often teach a lesson. Retell the story in order, then think about what it teaches you.
Worked examples
Example 1
A small bird shares her berries with a hungry mouse. Later, the mouse helps the bird build a nest. The lesson: kindness comes back to you.
Example 2
A boy brags he can finish a race alone, gets tired, and a friend slows down to run with him. The lesson: accepting help is not losing.
Example 3
The lesson is not the same as what happened. 'The rabbit lost the race' is the plot; 'steady effort beats overconfidence' is the lesson.
Practice questions
- Retell a folktale you know in order, from beginning to end.
- Tell what lesson the story is trying to teach.
- Explain how the events in the story show that lesson.

La enseñanza de un cuento
Las fábulas y los cuentos populares suelen enseñar una lección. Vuelve a contar el cuento en orden y piensa en lo que te enseña.
Ejemplo 1: Un pajarito comparte sus moras con un ratón hambriento. Después, el ratón ayuda al pájaro a construir su nido. La lección: la bondad regresa a ti.
Ejemplo 2: Un niño presume que puede terminar una carrera solo, se cansa, y un amigo baja el ritmo para correr con él. La lección: aceptar ayuda no es perder.
Ejemplo 3: La lección no es lo mismo que lo que pasó. 'La liebre perdió la carrera' es la trama; 'el esfuerzo constante vence a la soberbia' es la lección.
