What this lesson teaches
When you listen to a story or a talk, hold on to the big ideas. Then you can tell them back in your own words.
Worked examples
Example 1
After a teacher reads about how bees help flowers, you say, 'Bees carry pollen from flower to flower.'
Example 2
After a read-aloud about ants, you say, 'Ants live in colonies and each one has a job.'
Example 3
Retell in your own words, not the book's. If you can only repeat the exact sentence, you may not have understood it yet.
Practice questions
- Listen to a short story read out loud.
- Tell one key idea you heard.
- Retell the main ideas in the right order.

Escucha y vuelve a contar
Cuando escuchas un cuento o una charla, guarda las ideas importantes. Luego puedes decirlas con tus propias palabras.
Ejemplo 1: Después de que una maestra lee sobre cómo las abejas ayudan a las flores, dices: 'Las abejas llevan polen de flor en flor.'
Ejemplo 2: Después de una lectura en voz alta sobre las hormigas, dices: 'Las hormigas viven en colonias y cada una tiene un trabajo.'
Ejemplo 3: Recuenta con tus palabras, no con las del libro. Si solo puedes repetir la oración exacta, quizá todavía no la entendiste.
