Writing Routinely Across Time Frames
Aligned to W.11-12.10 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
What this lesson teaches
College and career demand both the quick, disciplined write — an email, a timed response, a summary — and the sustained project built over weeks. Learn to match your process to the clock: outline fast under pressure, but plan, draft, and revise in stages when time allows.
Worked example
Given twenty minutes to answer an exam prompt, a strong writer spends the first three planning a claim and two reasons, then writes without stopping; given three weeks for a paper, the same writer would instead draft, set it aside, and return — the deadline, not the topic, decides the method.
Practice questions
- Describe how you would plan a strong response when you have only twenty minutes.
- Describe how your process would change for a project you have three weeks to complete.
- Explain one habit that keeps quality high in the short form and one that keeps momentum in the long form.
