Revising for What Matters Most

Aligned to W.11-12.5 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.

What this lesson teaches

Serious revision is not proofreading — it means diagnosing what a draft is really trying to do and, if needed, restructuring or restarting to serve that purpose. Learn to cut a paragraph you like when it distracts from the point that matters most.

Worked example

A writer's essay defends a curfew but spends half its length on an unrelated story about a broken streetlight; revising, she deletes the story entirely — it was her favorite paragraph, but the piece got sharper the moment the strongest argument was no longer competing with a tangent.

Practice questions

  1. State in one sentence what your draft is most trying to accomplish.
  2. Identify one passage that does not serve that goal and decide whether to cut, move, or rewrite it.
  3. Make the change, then explain how the revision advanced the purpose more than fixing small errors would have.
