Narrative Technique and Pacing

Aligned to W.11-12.3 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.

What this lesson teaches

Mature narrative controls time and distance on purpose — compressing years into a clause, then slowing a single gesture into a paragraph — and uses sequence to build toward a felt outcome. Choose where to speed up and where to dwell so the pacing itself creates meaning.

Worked example

A narrator covers a whole childhood in one sentence — 'The years passed the way water leaves a tub' — then spends a full page on the ninety seconds of a final goodbye; the imbalance tells the reader which moment the whole life was really about.

Practice questions

  1. Draft a scene that compresses a long stretch of time into a single sentence.
  2. Rewrite one key moment in slow motion, expanding a few seconds into a full paragraph of detail.
  3. Explain how the contrast in pacing signals which moment matters most, without stating it outright.
