Informative & Research Writing

Aligned to W.11-12.2 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.

What this lesson teaches

Sustained research answers a real question or solves a problem by synthesizing several authoritative sources. You assess each source's strengths and limitations and weave them together without plagiarizing.

Worked example

Investigating renewable energy costs, you combine a government report, a peer-reviewed study, and an industry article, noting that the industry source may be biased, and synthesize them into one argument.

Practice questions

  1. Plan a research question that requires multiple sources.
  2. Note one strength and one limitation of a source.
  3. Synthesize three sources into a single supported conclusion.
