Crafting Narrative Writing

Aligned to W.11-12.3 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.

What this lesson teaches

Strong narrative writing develops real or imagined experiences with vivid detail, pacing, and a deliberate sequence of events. Techniques like dialogue, sensory description, and reflection make the experience feel real to a reader.

Worked example

Instead of 'I was nervous,' a writer shows a shaking hand spilling coffee — the detail makes the feeling visible.

Practice questions

  1. Turn a flat statement of emotion into a concrete image.
  2. Sequence three events so tension builds toward a climax.
  3. Add a line of dialogue that reveals character.

Componer Escritura Narrativa
