Conducting Sustained Research

Aligned to W.11-12.7 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.

What this lesson teaches

A research project starts with a focused question, then gathers and synthesizes several sources into an answer, narrowing or broadening the inquiry as needed. The goal is a supported conclusion, not a pile of facts.

Worked example

Asking why a local river floods, you combine weather data, a city report, and an engineer's interview into one explanation of the cause.

Practice questions

  1. Write a research question narrow enough to answer.
  2. Explain how to broaden a question that proves too small.
  3. Synthesize three findings into one claim.
