Narrative Technique and Pacing
Aligned to W.9-10.3 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
What this lesson teaches
Effective narrative uses well-chosen details, dialogue, and pacing to develop an experience. Slow down for moments that matter and compress the rest so the structure guides the reader's attention.
Worked example
To show a nervous audition, spend three sentences on the singer's shaking hands and one clause on the whole car ride there — the imbalance signals what the story cares about.
Practice questions
- Draft an opening that drops the reader into a moment without backstory.
- Write one detail and one line of dialogue that reveal character indirectly.
- Revise the pacing so the most important moment gets the most space.
