What this lesson teaches
Interpret figures of speech in context and analyze subtle differences among words with similar meanings. Nuance — the shade of difference between near-synonyms — carries real meaning.
Worked example
'Thrifty,' 'frugal,' and 'stingy' all describe careful spending, but 'stingy' adds disapproval, so calling a host stingy insults them while calling them thrifty does not.
Practice questions
- Interpret a metaphor or idiom based on its context, not its literal words.
- Rank three near-synonyms from most positive to most negative and explain the shades.
- Write a sentence where swapping one near-synonym for another changes the tone.
