What this lesson teaches
Apply knowledge of how language functions in different contexts to make choices that serve meaning and style. Vary sentence length and structure deliberately, matching the rhythm to the effect you want.
Worked example
A string of short sentences speeds a tense scene: 'He stopped. He listened. Nothing.' A single long sentence would blunt the urgency the fragments create.
Practice questions
- Rewrite a flat sentence to sharpen its style without changing its meaning.
- Explain how varying sentence length could change a passage's rhythm.
