What this lesson teaches
The habits you set in late adolescence strongly shape your lifelong health, from consistent sleep and hygiene to preventive checkups and immunizations. Understanding your own risk factors, including family health history, lets you reduce your chances of avoidable chronic disease. Prevention now is far easier than treatment later.
Worked example
Knowing that heart disease runs in your family might motivate you to build habits early, like staying active, not smoking, and getting routine checkups, to lower your own long-term risk.
Practice questions
- Name two preventive health habits worth keeping.
- Why does family health history matter to you?
- How does prevention compare to treating disease later?
