Communication, conflict resolution, and advocacy

Aligned to NHES 4 — SHAPE America National Standards.

What this lesson teaches

Strong communication underpins healthy adult relationships and workplaces: being assertive without being aggressive, listening actively, negotiating, and resolving conflict respectfully. These skills let you handle disagreements without harm and stand up for yourself and others. Practicing them now prepares you for relationships, work, and community life.

Worked example

In a disagreement with a friend, using an I-statement like I feel frustrated when plans change last minute, and active listening to their side, resolves the conflict far better than blaming or shutting down.

Practice questions

  1. Explain the difference between assertive and aggressive.
  2. Give an example of an I-statement for a conflict.
  3. Name one active-listening skill you can practice.
