What this lesson teaches

Human activities like habitat loss and pollution reduce biodiversity. Engineered solutions such as wildlife corridors, habitat restoration, and protected areas can lower these impacts and are refined by testing their results.

Worked example

Building a vegetated overpass across a highway lets migrating animals cross safely, reducing roadkill and reconnecting populations that the road had split apart.

Practice questions

  1. Identify one human activity that is reducing biodiversity in a named ecosystem.
  2. Propose a solution and list the criteria you would use to judge its success.
  3. Explain how you would test and refine your solution using data on species numbers.
