Writing for Task and Audience
Aligned to W.9-10.4 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
What this lesson teaches
Match your development, organization, and style to the task, purpose, and audience; a complaint letter and a text to a friend need different tones and structures.
Worked example
Explaining a bus delay, a formal email to a manager uses full sentences and a calm tone, while a note to a sibling uses shorthand — same facts, different style for the audience.
Practice questions
- Name the task, purpose, and audience for a piece you plan to write.
- Rewrite one sentence to fit a more formal audience.
- Explain how your organization would change for a different purpose.
