Tracing Theme Across a Story

What this lesson teaches
A theme is the insight about life a story reveals, not just its topic; trace how it emerges and shifts through key moments, then summarize the plot objectively without opinion.
Worked example
A story opens with a boy hoarding coins in a jar and ends when he gives them away after a flood ruins his neighbor's home; the jar shows the theme that security comes from generosity, not possessions.
Practice questions
- State a possible theme of a story and list three moments that build it.
- Write a two-sentence objective summary that includes no personal opinion.
- Explain how the theme at the end differs from the impression given at the start.
