What this lesson teaches
Complex characters carry conflicting traits and motives that shift over time; analyze how their choices and interactions push the plot forward or deepen the theme.
Worked example
A loyal deputy who secretly resents his sheriff hesitates during a robbery; his split-second choice to help exposes his inner conflict and forces the town to rethink its trust.
Practice questions
- Identify two conflicting traits in one character and cite a moment each appears.
- Explain how one interaction between two characters changes the plot's direction.
- Trace how a character's motive at the climax differs from their motive at the opening.
