What this lesson teaches
Authors arrange events — using flashbacks, gaps, or delays — to control what readers know and when, creating suspense or surprise.
Worked example
A story reveals a character's funeral in its first line, then flashes back through the ordinary morning that led there; knowing the ending makes every small choice feel heavy with dread.
Practice questions
- Identify one flashback or time shift and explain what it withholds or reveals.
- Explain how reordering two scenes would change the suspense.
- Describe how the placement of a single revelation creates surprise.
