What this lesson teaches
A work from outside the United States reflects a point of view shaped by its culture; analyze how that perspective shapes what the narrator notices, values, and leaves unsaid.
Worked example
In a tale set in a coastal fishing village, the narrator measures wealth by the size of one's nets, not money — a cultural value that reframes what 'success' means in the story.
Practice questions
- Identify one value or assumption the narrator treats as normal.
- Explain how a reader from another culture might interpret an event differently.
