The Maya & Early Civilizations of the Americas

Aligned to C3.D2.His.10 — C3 Framework for Social Studies State Standards.

What this lesson teaches

In Mesoamerica, civilizations rose independently of the Old World. The Olmec laid early foundations with cities and giant carved heads; the Maya later built city-states with stone pyramids, developed a written script, and made striking advances in astronomy and mathematics — including the concept of zero.

Worked example

Maya astronomers tracked the sun, moon, and Venus so precisely that their calendar predicted eclipses, and their number system used a symbol for zero centuries before it was common in Europe — all without the wheel or iron tools.

Practice questions

  1. Who were the Olmec, and why are they important?
  2. Explain two achievements of the Maya in math or astronomy.
  3. The Maya reached great heights in science without metal tools or the wheel. What does this suggest about how we should measure a civilization's success?
