Aligned to C3.D2.His — C3 Framework for Social Studies State Standards.

What this lesson teaches

Ancient Greece and Rome shaped much of the modern world. Greece gave us early democracy, philosophy, and the Olympics; Rome built a vast republic and empire with roads, law, and engineering. Their ideas about government and citizenship still influence us.

Worked example

In Athens, citizens voted directly on laws — an early democracy. Rome was a republic, where citizens elected representatives (senators) — closer to how the U.S. government works today.

Practice questions

  1. What is one idea we get from ancient Greece? From Rome?
  2. How was Athenian democracy different from the Roman republic?
  3. Name one Roman invention still used today.
