Ancient River-Valley Civilizations
Aligned to C3.D2.His — C3 Framework for Social Studies State Standards.
What this lesson teaches
The first cities grew along rivers — the Nile, Tigris-Euphrates, Indus, and Huang He — because rivers provided water, fertile soil, and transport, enabling farming surpluses and complex societies.
Worked example
Yearly Nile floods left rich soil, so Egyptians grew surplus food, freeing some people to become builders, priests, and scribes — the roots of civilization.
Practice questions
- Why did early civilizations form near rivers?
- How did food surpluses change how people lived?
- Name two ancient river valleys and their rivers.
