Writing Every Day

Aligned to W.6.10 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.

What this lesson teaches

Skilled writers write often — sometimes a quick response in minutes, sometimes a project over days. Match your effort to the task: a journal entry can be fast and loose; an essay needs planning and revision.

Worked example

In one week a writer jots a two-minute reflection on a chapter, drafts a five-day argument essay, and answers a short quiz prompt. Different time frames, different purposes — all keep the writing muscle strong.

Practice questions

  1. Write a quick 5-minute response to something you read or did today.
  2. Start a longer piece and plan it in three notes before drafting.
  3. Compare the two: explain how the time you had changed how you wrote.
