Following a Speaker's Reasons
Aligned to SL.5.3 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
What this lesson teaches
When someone gives an opinion out loud, listen for their points and the reasons or evidence behind each one. Notice which claims are well supported.
Worked examples
Example 1
A classmate argues for a longer lunch. Her reasons: kids eat too fast, and rushing causes stomachaches — you can retell each claim and its support.
Example 2
A speaker argues for uniforms. Reasons: less comparison between families, faster mornings. You can retell both and say which one has evidence.
Example 3
A speaker who repeats a claim louder has not added a reason. Notice the difference between emphasis and support.
Practice questions
- Summarize the main points a speaker made.
- Match one reason to the claim it supports.
- Judge whether a claim had strong evidence.

Seguir las Razones de un Orador
Cuando alguien da una opinión en voz alta, escucha sus puntos y las razones o evidencias detrás de cada uno. Fíjate en qué afirmaciones están bien apoyadas.
Ejemplo 1: Una compañera pide un almuerzo más largo. Sus razones: los niños comen muy rápido y las prisas causan dolor de estómago — puedes repetir cada afirmación y su apoyo.
Ejemplo 2: Un ponente defiende los uniformes. Razones: menos comparación entre familias, mañanas más rápidas. Puedes repetir ambas y decir cuál tiene evidencia.
Ejemplo 3: Un ponente que repite una afirmación más fuerte no agregó una razón. Nota la diferencia entre énfasis y sustento.
