Comparing Stories in a Genre

Aligned to RL.5.9 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.

What this lesson teaches

Stories in the same genre, like fairy tales or mysteries, often share themes but handle them differently. Compare how each one treats the same idea.

Worked example

Two adventure tales both teach 'never give up,' but one hero wins by cleverness and the other by kindness — same theme, different paths.

Practice questions

  1. Name two stories in one genre that share a theme.
  2. Explain how each story handles that theme differently.
  3. Tell which approach you found stronger and why.
