Finding the Theme
Aligned to RL.5.2 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
What this lesson teaches
A theme is the big lesson or message a story teaches, not just what happens. Look at how characters face problems and what they learn to uncover it.
Worked examples
Example 1
A boy who lies to look cool loses his friends' trust, then earns it back by being honest. The theme: honesty matters more than showing off.
Example 2
A girl who refuses to join in teasing a classmate loses her spot in the group, then finds better friends. The theme: standing alone is sometimes the right cost.
Example 3
The theme is what the story says about life, not what the character says. Characters can be wrong; the story still teaches something.
Practice questions
- State a story's theme in one full sentence.
- Name a challenge a character faced and what it taught them.
- Write a two-sentence summary that includes the theme.

Descubrir el Tema
El tema es la gran lección o mensaje que enseña una historia, no solo lo que sucede. Observa cómo los personajes enfrentan sus problemas y qué aprenden para descubrirlo.
Ejemplo 1: Un niño miente para parecer genial y pierde la confianza de sus amigos; luego la recupera siendo sincero. El tema: la honestidad vale más que presumir.
Ejemplo 2: Una niña se niega a burlarse de un compañero y pierde su lugar en el grupo, y luego encuentra mejores amigos. El tema: a veces quedarse solo es el precio correcto.
Ejemplo 3: El tema es lo que el cuento dice sobre la vida, no lo que dice el personaje. Los personajes pueden equivocarse; el cuento igual enseña algo.
